Manual Image Tagger

The Manual Image Tagger lets you review, rate, and curate inspection photos for AI training datasets. Filter images by one or more tags, assign quality ratings (Good, Bad, or In Progress), apply or remove tags directly on each image, create your own custom tags, track every action in the activity log, undo recent mistakes, and download curated datasets with built-in duplicate detection.

New — Changes save automatically. Quality ratings and tag changes are saved the moment you click them. There is no longer a Save Changes button or a Ctrl+S shortcut — if you see a confirmation toast or the rating button changes color, your change is already stored. If a save fails, you will see an error toast and the change will be reverted on screen.

Accessing the Manual Tagger

Open the analytics dashboard and click Manual Tagger in the left sidebar navigation. You must have the Manual Tagger permission assigned to your account — if you do not see this option, contact your administrator.

Filtering Images

The toolbar at the top of the page is built from chips. Each chip is one active filter, and you add new ones with the + Add filter button. Removing a chip (via its ×) clears that filter.

Multi-Tag Filtering (OR)

You can filter by zero, one, or many tags at the same time. With multiple tag chips selected, the grid shows any image that has at least one of those tags (OR semantics) — useful when you are surveying several related conditions or comparing tags side by side.

1. Click + Add filter in the chip row
2. In the picker, the top group is Tags. Type to search or scroll the list
3. Click a tag to add it as a chip — the grid refreshes immediately
4. To add another tag, click + Add filter again
5. To remove a tag from the filter, click the × on its chip

When more than three tags are selected, the extra chips are collapsed behind a +N more chip — click it to see the full list.

With no tags selected, the grid is in browse-all mode and shows every image regardless of tag — useful for finding untagged photos to triage.

Other Filters

The same + Add filter button surfaces non-tag filters in an Other filters group. Each one becomes a chip you can edit by clicking on it.

Filter	Description	Notes
Date captured	Range of capture dates. Includes presets (Last 7 days, Last 30 days, Last 3 months, This year).	Click the chip to reopen the date picker.
Site visit	Exact-match a site visit ID (e.g. 32777).	Click the chip to edit. Debounced — results appear after typing pauses.
Building	Partial match on building name (e.g. Tower A).	Debounced.
Rating	Filter to images rated Good, Bad, In Progress, or Unrated for any selected tag.	Only available when at least one tag is selected — the rating is per-tag, so it needs a tag context.
Search (top toolbar)	Type to search by filename / caption text.	Debounced. Lives in the URL as ?q=.

Tip — All filters are URL-shareable. The selected tags (?tags=Cracking,Spalling), rating (?rating=good), date range, site visit, and building all live in the URL, so you can bookmark or share a filtered view with a teammate.

Sort Options

Click the sort dropdown to change image ordering:

• Captured — Date the photo was taken (default)
• Site Visit — Site visit ID number
• Filename — Alphabetical by file name

Click the arrow button next to the sort dropdown to toggle ascending / descending.

Understanding the Stats Bar

Below the filter chips, a stats bar shows a real-time summary of the images in your current view:

• Total — Total number of images matching your filters
• ● Good — Images rated as good quality
• ● Bad — Images rated as bad quality
• ● In Progress — Images marked as in progress
• ● Unrated — Images not yet rated

Rating Image Quality

Each image card displays a thumbnail, filename, site visit, capture date, and the tags currently applied to it. The active tag (the first tag chip in your filter, when one is selected) is shown bold and filled; other tags on the same image — its siblings — are shown as muted chips so you can see context without acting on them.

1. Find the image in the grid
2. Click one of the three rating buttons at the bottom of the card:
   • Good (green) — Suitable for training
   • Bad (red) — Not suitable for training
   • In Progress (yellow) — Needs further review

The change is saved instantly. Clicking the currently active rating is a no-op (it does not toggle off) — to change a rating, click a different one.

Quality ratings are per-tag — the same image can be rated Good for Cracking but Bad for Spalling. The rating buttons act on the active tag shown in bold on the card.

Applying and Removing Tags

You can apply multiple tags to any image:

1. Hover the image card
2. Click the + button to open the tag popover
3. Search or scroll, check the tags you want, click Apply

Indicators in the tag popover:

• Lock icon — A system tag that is already applied and cannot be removed here
• X button — A tag you applied and can remove
• Empty checkbox — A tag not yet applied to this image

Quick-remove from a card

To remove a tag without opening the popover, hover any tag chip on the card — a small × appears. Click it to remove that tag. A toast appears in the bottom-right corner with an Undo button that re-applies the tag if you removed it by accident.

Reviewing an Image in Detail

For a closer look:

1. Hover the image card
2. Click the eye icon to open the full-screen review modal
3. You will see a larger image plus full metadata: Site Visit, Building, Floor, Elevation, Captured date, Tagged date, and caption
4. Use keyboard shortcuts to rate quickly:
   • 1 = Good   2 = Bad   3 = In Progress
   • Left / Right arrows = Navigate between images (auto-loads the next page when needed)
5. You can also apply tags from the modal via the + button

Viewing an Image's History

Each image has its own history popover:

1. Hover the image card
2. Click the clock icon
3. The popover shows every action ever recorded for that image, across all tags:
   • Action chip — Tagged, Untagged, or Rated
   • For ratings, a quality transition (e.g., Bad → Good)
   • The tag involved, the timestamp, and who performed the action

Bulk Operations

Select multiple images by clicking the checkbox in the top-left of each card. A banner pinned to the bottom of the page shows the selection count and the bulk actions.

Bulk Quality Rating

In the banner, click Good, Bad, or In Progress to rate every selected image.

Tag context required. Because ratings are per-tag, bulk rating needs to know which tag you are rating against. If you have:

• No tag filter — the banner shows "Add a tag filter to bulk rate" and the rating buttons are hidden.
• One tag filter — the rating is applied to that tag.
• Multiple tag filters — the banner shows a Rate picker so you can choose which tag.

Selected images that do not actually carry that tag are skipped, and an info toast tells you how many.

Bulk Tagging

1. Select the images
2. In the banner, choose a tag from the Tag to apply… dropdown
3. Click Tag to apply it

Click Clear to deselect all images.

Creating and Managing Custom Tags

In addition to system tags from nSpec inspection data (shown with a lock icon), you can create your own custom tags.

Creating a Custom Tag

1. Click the + button next to the tag area in the page header
2. Enter a Tag name
3. Choose a Color (default is blue)
4. Click Create

The new tag appears with a custom badge and is auto-selected as a filter chip.

Editing a Custom Tag

1. Open the tag picker (+ Add filter)
2. Find the custom tag (look for the custom badge)
3. Click its three-dot menu → Edit
4. Update name / color, then Save

Deleting a Custom Tag

1. In the tag picker, open the custom tag's three-dot menu → Delete
2. Confirm in the dialog

Note: You cannot delete a custom tag that is currently assigned to images. The error message will tell you how many images still carry it — remove the tag from those images first (or use bulk operations) before deleting it.

Activity Log

The Activity Log is a timeline of every action — tags applied, tags removed, ratings changed, and custom-tag edits — across all tags. Open it by clicking Activity in the page header. A drawer slides in from the right.

What an Entry Shows

Each row is one batch — a single user action that may affect one or many images at once:

• Action chip — Tagged, Removed, Rated, or one of the edit actions (Tag created, Tag updated, Tag deleted)
• Image summary — For a single-image batch, the image ID is shown as a monospace chip you can hover for the full ID. For multi-image batches, N images is shown
• Tag(s) involved
• Quality transition (for rated batches of one image) — e.g., Bad → Good
• Time — Relative (5m ago) with a tooltip showing the exact timestamp
• Who performed it

Rows are grouped by date headers (Today, Yesterday, then weekday + date).

Filtering Activity

• Action filter (Segmented at the top) — quick switch between All, Tagged, Removed, Rated, and Edits (tag create/update/delete grouped together).
• More filters — expands a panel with:
  • User select — only show actions by one specific person
  • Date range picker
  Active filter count is shown as a badge on the More filters button. Click Clear to reset all filters.

Today Summary

When there is activity from today, a one-line summary appears above the timeline: Today: N tagged, N untagged, N rated.

Expanding a Bulk Batch

For batches affecting more than one image, click Show N on the row to expand a list of every image touched. Each row shows the image ID and (for rated batches) the per-image quality transition. Click Hide to collapse.

Undoing an Action

Tagged, Removed, and Rated batches show an Undo button. Clicking it reverses the action:

• Tagged — removes the tag from every image in the batch
• Removed — re-applies the tag to every image in the batch
• Rated — restores the previous rating each image had before this batch (captured at the time of the change)

24-hour undo window. Undo only works for actions taken within the last 24 hours. After that, the Undo button still appears but the server will reject it with an error. Tag create/update/delete edits cannot be undone — use the custom-tag tools to redo them manually.

Refreshing

The header of the drawer has a refresh button (the circular-arrow icon) that pulls the latest activity on demand. It spins while loading. Activity also refreshes automatically after you take an action that records a new entry.

Downloading a Training Dataset

Once images have been rated, you can download a curated training dataset. The download wizard walks you through three steps.

Step 1: Configure

1. Click the Download button in the toolbar above the image grid
2. Select which quality categories to include (Good, Bad, In Progress)
3. Optionally set a date range filter by:
   • Choosing Captured Date or Tagged Date
   • Picking a start and end date
4. Click Analyze to see how many images match your criteria
5. Review the results and click Next

Note: Downloads with more than 200 images may take longer or time out on some environments. Narrow your filters if you run into issues.

Step 2: Duplicate Detection

• A progress bar shows the scan progress
• Results display the number of unique images and duplicates found
• Expand each duplicate group to see which images are identical
• The first image in each group is kept; duplicates are excluded from the download

Step 3: Download

1. Set the Test Split percentage with the slider (5–50%, default 15%)
2. Review the split preview table
3. Click Download
4. The ZIP saves to your downloads folder as {tag}_training_images.zip with images organized into Train and Test folders by quality category

Quality Rating Guidelines

Rating	Color	When to Use
Good	Green	The image clearly shows the tagged condition and is suitable for AI training
Bad	Red	The image is blurry, mislabeled, or does not clearly show the condition
In Progress	Yellow	You are unsure and want to flag the image for further review

Keyboard Shortcuts

There is no longer a Ctrl+S save shortcut — changes are saved automatically as you click.

Notes and Gotchas

• Ratings are per-tag. The same image can be Good for one tag and Bad for another. The rating buttons on a card always act on the active tag (the bold chip — the first tag in your filter).
• Active tag vs. sibling tags. Cards show all tags on an image. The active tag is filled and bold; siblings are muted and cannot be rated against from that card — switch your tag filter to make a sibling the active tag first.
• Multi-tag filter is OR, not AND. Selecting Cracking + Spalling shows every image with at least one of them, not only images with both.
• Rating filter requires a tag. The Rating chip is only available while at least one tag is selected. If you remove the last tag, the rating filter clears automatically.
• Bulk rating requires a tag. Same reason — without a tag context the system does not know which per-tag rating to write. The bulk banner will tell you to "Add a tag filter to bulk rate".
• Auto-save means no Discard. There is no draft state to throw away. If you change your mind, use Undo in the Activity Log (24-hour window) or re-rate the image directly.
• Undo expires after 24 hours. The button remains visible past the window, but server-side it will be rejected. Tag-edit (create / rename / delete) events cannot be undone at all.
• Custom tag deletion is blocked while in use. Remove the tag from all images first (the error tells you the count). The tag's marker row in DynamoDB does not count toward this — only real image assignments do.
• Filters live in the URL. Tags, rating, date range, site visit, and building are all in query params, so a filtered view is shareable and bookmarkable.
• Search and field debounce. Search, site visit, and building inputs debounce (≈300–400ms) before the grid refreshes — there is no "Search" button to press.
• Activity log loads in pages of 30. Scroll the drawer to load more; the refresh button only re-fetches the first page.
• Selection clears when filters change. Switching tag filters, toggling rating, or changing date range resets the bulk selection to avoid acting on images that are no longer visible.

Troubleshooting

No Images Appear After Selecting a Tag

Problem: You added a tag chip but the grid is empty.

• Check the Rating chip — clear it if you are filtering to a rating that has no images yet
• Clear the Date captured, Site visit, and Building chips if any are set
• Clear the search box in the top toolbar
• The tag may genuinely have no images yet — custom tags start empty

A Rating I Just Clicked Disappeared

Problem: You clicked Good / Bad / In Progress but the rating reverted.

• A failed save shows an error toast and rolls back the on-screen change. Check your network and try again.
• Open the Activity Log and look for the most recent Rated entry for that image — if it is not there, the save did not complete.
• If you were trying to clear a rating, note that clicking the currently active rating is a no-op now — there is no "unrated" state to set from a card.

Bulk Rating Buttons Are Hidden

Problem: The bottom banner shows only the count and a Tag picker — no Good / Bad / In Progress buttons.

• Add a tag chip to your filter. Ratings are per-tag and the banner needs to know which one to rate against.
• If multiple tags are selected, choose a tag in the Rate picker that appears in the banner.

Undo Button Returns an Error

Problem: Clicking Undo on an old action shows "Undo window has expired" or similar.

• The 24-hour window has passed. Re-tag or re-rate the affected images manually.
• Tag created / updated / deleted entries are not undoable — use the custom-tag tools to revert.

Cannot Delete a Custom Tag

Problem: Error when deleting a custom tag.

• The tag is still on one or more images — the error message reports how many
• Remove it from those images first (per-card × or bulk operations)

Download Times Out or Fails

• Narrow the date range or pick fewer quality categories
• Downloads of more than 200 images are more likely to time out
• Check internet connection and retry

Manual Tagger Is Not Visible

• You need the Manual Tagger permission — contact your administrator
• Confirm you are logged in with the correct account
