Boost Categories

Boost Categories let administrators mark documents or folders as authoritative for specific topics. When users search for related content, tagged documents rank higher in results — ensuring the most important company resources surface first.

Tenant admin access required. You need tenant admin permissions to manage boost categories. If you don't see the Boost Categories option, contact your administrator.

Accessing Boost Categories

  1. Navigate to the Document Library admin panel
  2. Click the Boost Categories button, or go directly to the Boost Categories page

How Boost Categories Work

Boost categories work in two ways depending on the tag type:

Tag Type Badge Color How It Works Boost Range
Document Tag Blue Direct boost when the tagged document appears in search results — no semantic check needed 2x – 20x (default 10x)
Folder Tag Green Semantic matching against the category description — documents are boosted only when the search query is relevant to the category's meaning 0.25x – 2x (default 0.5x)

Viewing Categories

The main page shows all categories for your tenant. You can:

  • Search — type in the search box to filter by category name, description, or folder path
  • Filter by type — click All, Folder (green dot), or Document (blue dot) to filter

Each category card shows the name, type badge, boost multiplier, threshold (folder tags only), number of tagged documents/folders, description, and creation date.

Creating a Boost Category

  1. Click + Add Category
  2. Fill in the form:
    Field Required Notes
    Category Name Yes Max 100 characters. Use descriptive phrases instead of short names for better matching (e.g., "BECI office addresses and branch locations" not "Offices")
    Tag Type Yes Choose Document Tag (for critical docs) or Folder Tag (for organizing groups)
    Category Description Folder tags only 100–2,000 characters. Describe what queries should match this category
    Boost Multiplier Yes Use the slider or type a number. Document tags: 2–20x. Folder tags: 0.25–2x
    Similarity Threshold Folder tags only 0.3–0.9 (default 0.5). Controls how closely a query must match the category's meaning. Click Show matching examples to see how different thresholds affect results
  3. Review the preview box at the bottom — it explains how the boost will work for your selected type
  4. Click Create Category

Editing a Category

  1. Click Edit on the category card
  2. Modify the fields as needed
  3. Click Save Changes

Deleting a Category

  1. Click Delete on the category card
  2. A confirmation message appears: "Are you sure you want to delete [name]? This will remove the boost tag from [count] documents."
  3. Click Confirm Delete to proceed, or Cancel to keep it

Tagging Documents

After creating categories, apply them to documents:

  1. Go to the Document Library (via Document Library)
  2. Select the documents you want to tag
  3. Click the tag icon to apply a boost category
  4. Tagged documents will now rank higher when users search for related topics

Best Practices

  • Use descriptive category names — "BECI office addresses and branch locations" matches better than "Offices" because the AI uses semantic similarity
  • Use Document Tags for critical docs — employee handbooks, safety manuals, HR policies that should always rank first
  • Use Folder Tags for topic areas — group related documents in folders and boost the whole folder for relevant queries
  • Start with a moderate boost — begin at the default multiplier and increase only if tagged documents aren't surfacing high enough
  • Include synonyms in descriptions — for folder tags, mention alternative terms users might search for (e.g., "PTO, vacation, time off, leave policy")

Troubleshooting

Tagged documents aren't ranking higher

Solutions:

  • For Folder Tags, make sure the category description is detailed enough — short names produce low similarity scores
  • Try lowering the Similarity Threshold (e.g., from 0.5 to 0.4) to broaden matching
  • For Document Tags, increase the Boost Multiplier
  • Click Show matching examples in the edit modal to see how your category scores against sample queries

Boosted documents are drowning out other results

Solutions:

  • Lower the Boost Multiplier — a 2x boost is subtle, 20x is very aggressive
  • For folder tags, raise the Similarity Threshold so the boost only applies to highly relevant queries
